Is understanding evil inherently evil? Does understanding imply empathy? Is empathy therefore evil? Who is tasked with defining evil? If definition implies understanding, and understanding implies empathy, are both definition and definer evil? Does the beast that kills for territory associate its actions with the concept of evil? What of the man who fells a tree? What of the wind and rain?

Heirless heir. Braid. Mouth hidden behind a dark beard. Soft, moist eyes. A third dowry. “Why have you taken her away?” Stone walls. Mortar. Brown fields bearing the crops. Winter approaching. Silent blade in a gilded scabbard. Smoke drifting lazily from chimneys that threaten to topple. Cottages. Huts. Bleeding woman, dead on the ground. There will be extra rations this year.

The passage of time is cruel. The winds rip through the trees and carry debris, digging sharp lines in soft skin. Familiar shapes bloat and swell under pressure. Leaves fall, dry, and crumble. The skies grow confused as lightning and thunder appear independently. The animals act erratically, frightened by the shifting colors and thorny vines. Paths once cleared are quickly overgrown. The wilderness changes. The wilderness consumes.
